‘Ocean’s 8’ is exactly the film the feminist movement needs right now
If you’ve watched any of the films from the Ocean’s trilogy, you’re probably screaming with anticipation in regards to the new Oceans 8 film. I know I am.
For the first time ever, the film stars an all-female ensemble with names like Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, and many more.
But rather than the infamous casino heist plotline that the original cast has blessed us with (for seven straight films), this one is set at the Met Gala, the target is Daphne Kluger (Hathaway), and the reward for the heist is a cool $150 million.
The film exudes power by dividing the actresses into a typical heist. Debbie Ocean (Bullock), the sister of Danny Ocean (George Clooney) in the previous films, has just gotten out of jail and immediately assembles her crew with Cate Blanchett, Rihanna (a computer hacker), Awkwafina (a professional hustler), Kaling (jewelry expert), pitted against Anne Hathaway’s sly, elegant, and seemingly all-knowing character.
This film not only brings together our favorite Hollywood women, but finally allows women a platform to perform as the feminine counterparts of a beloved crew of hilariously entertaining and widely successful men.
The film has been announced during a very sensitive time in Hollywood, where more and more women are coming out about darker, salacious moments they’ve experienced in Hollywood.
The film is a refreshing spin on what usually caters to a female audience and still maintains the same theme as the original Ocean’s films.
There’s no doubt that Ocean’s 8 will exceed expectations, having already garnered such a positive response and following from the Ocean’s trilogy fanbase.

There’s also been a huge response from the gay community regarding Bullock and Blanchett’s characters. Some fans have high hopes the duo is a lesbian couple, a definite twist on the typical relationship that is found in Hollywood movies.

And finally, a little blast from the past: The movie trailer shows Debbie standing over her brother’s grave, alluding to the fact that Danny’s character is dead — or pulling one last ruse? We’ll just have to wait and see.
The film is produced by Steven Soderbergh, the original director of the Ocean’s Trilogy and directed by Gary Ross of The Hunger Games and will be out June 8, 2018.
We can’t wait!
